The Windows 7 operating system hits its end-of-support stage on Jan. 14, 2020. After that date, free patches from Microsoft come to an end. But Microsoft's ESU program offers a way for customers who haven't moved off the OS to extend the delivery of "Critical" and "Important" Win 7 patches. This is achieved by buying ESU keys, a MAK (multiple activation key) that works with a Key Management Service (KMS). This key updates the license and the customer continues to get security patches. Windows 7 ESU are on a per device basis.

The ESU program permits patch extensions for a maximum of three years. This product is a one-time payment that will have to be renewed in 2021 and 2022, if needed. Note that the price will increase for each successive year of renewal.
