VMware Virtual SAN is a hypervisor-converged storage solution. VMware Virtual SAN combines storage and computing for virtual machines into a single device, with storage provided within the hypervisor, instead of using a storage virtual machine that runs alongside the other virtual machines. VMware Virtual SAN aggregates locally attached disks in a cluster to create a storage solution, called a shared data store, which can be rapidly provisioned during virtual machine provisioning operations.

VMware Virtual SAN is an object-based storage system that is designed to provide virtual machine - centric storage services and capabilities through a storage policy - based management (SPBM) platform. The SPBM platform and virtual machine storage policies are designed to simplify virtual machine storage placement decisions. VMware Virtual SAN provides both high availability and scale-out storage capabilities. In the context of QoS, virtual machine storage policies can be created to define the levels of performance and availability required on a per-virtual machine basis.
