Addressing Virtualization Challenges with SDDC

Virtualizing Hardware Enables Greater Flexibility, Reduced Capex and Opex

by Kurt Hildebrand | 03.22.17

The rise of virtualization has shifted focus and control away from physical hardware, initially for servers, and eventually for storage and networking. A study by MarketsandMarkets predicts that the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) market will surpass $77 billion by 2020. SDDC is an important concept because it virtualizes, abstracts, and automates all major IT infrastructure, enabling far more flexibility and eliminating much of the complexity in configuring and making changes.

The Logic of Logic Layer

Moving to a Converged Data Center is Easier Than You Think

by Kurt Hildebrand | 02.17.17

The software-defined data center (SDDC) is increasingly considered to be the next step in the evolution of virtualization and cloud computing. It typically consists of three core components: network virtualization, server virtualization, and storage virtualization. But a business logic layer is also required to translate application requirements, SLAs, policies, and cost considerations into provisioning and management instructions.

Have You Seen the Latest in Converged Infrastructure?

by Kurt Hildebrand | 12.02.16

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of growth in converged infrastructures. Essentially, a converged infrastructure is any type of infrastructure that takes two or more discrete pieces of technology and consolidates them into one information system solution. Traditional converged systems, ones that are packaged solutions, take existing technology and consolidate it into a repeatable, standardized deployment framework. But the new model of converged systems takes that disparate technology and converges it in a much more tightly integrated way, using something called the software-defined data center. Software-defined is just another way of saying hyperconvergence.

Single-Pane Management Pains Have a Remedy

by Jake Bernier | 09.27.16

The phrase “single pane of glass” is almost always included somewhere on the marketing slick for every piece of infrastructure management software. And the reason is obvious—because who in their right mind would choose to have IT administrators juggling multiple applications all day just to keep the lights on? As obvious as that may seem, the truth is that most data centers still require highly-specialized, on-site resources that are proficient with dozens of infrastructure technologies and the various management standards that govern each of them individually. Administrators are not looking though a single pane of glass, but rather through a kaleidoscope.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the 270% ROI Windows Server 2012 offers –and that’s significant. But let’s go beyond the numbers to see what else R2 has to offer.
